IND vs NZ: Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan want MS Dhoni to guide Virat Kohli in India vs New Zealand

Despite the embarrassing 10-wicket loss to Pakistan in the last match, no fingers were pointed at mentor MS Dhoni. The former India skipper was brought in to provide calm in the dressing room and help Captain Virat Kohli stay put in crunch situations but India’s monumental failure raises the question, why is Dhoni there? Former India cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Gautam Gambhir have stressed the importance of MS Dhoni ahead of a must-win game.

Both want Dhoni to play an active role in a must-win match for Virat Kohli & Co against the Blackcaps. “For me, a lot will rest on MS Dhoni and his experience. He is the most seasoned head in that dressing room. He can guide Virat Kohli on how to play crunch situations,” Gambhir wrote in his column for The Times of India.

“I don’t know how the roles are divided between Dhoni and coach Ravi Shastri but it will be crucial if the former is in Virat’s ears. I am not suggesting a crash course in tactics for Virat but it will be good if Dhoni is more hands-on for today’s game,” he added.

Harbhajan Singh also has similar advice from Virat Kohli. He wants Kohli to follow Dhoni’s tactics of building pressure.

“T20s is such a format where if you don’t take wickets, you’ll keep getting further away from the game. For that, the pressure will have to be created in the field setting like MS Dhoni does when he captains CSK,” Harbhajan Singh said.

  1. Virat Kohli was quite excited with MS Dhoni named as a mentor for the Indian cricket team in the showpiece tournament. He must have discussed a few plans with the talisman after a drubbing by Pakistan.
  2. Dhoni is known for his masterstrokes on the field and picking his brain can only help Kohli.
  3. The 32-year-old is chasing his maiden ICC trophy while Dhoni has won all 3- T20 WC, 50-over WC and Champions Trophy. Dhoni guided India to the maiden T20 World Cup title in the inaugural T20 WC. He has guided Men in Blue to multiple semifinals of T20 WC.
  4. The former India captain brings in a calm influence in the dressing room. Can the players make the best out for it matters- India vs New Zealand?
  5. BUT Even Dhoni has failed to help India defeat New Zealand in ICC tournaments, can he help Kohli end an 18-year-long losing streak?
