IND vs NZ LIVE: Shreyas Iyer sends warning to Cheteshwar Pujara & Ajinkya Rahane with half-century on Test debut

Debutant Shreyas Iyer on Thursday had a dream debut and why not if you get a maiden Test cap from legendary Sunil Gavaskar. The youngster finally made his Test debut after playing 53 limited-overs matches for India. He grabbed the opportunity with both hands as he went on to score a fifty against New Zealand. Iyer looked calm and composed as he kept one end busy while wickets continued to fall from the other end. His special innings put pressure on Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane who failed to deliver big time once again.

  • Shreyas Iyer brought up his fifty off 94 balls on his Test debut. He looked rock solid against Kiwi spearhead Kyle Jamieson and spinners.
  • He remained unbeaten on 75 off 136 balls that comprised 7 boundaries and a couple of sixes.
  • Iyer who is known for his attacking brand of cricket showcased his calm temperament and played as per the demand of the situation.
  • He walked out to bat when India were 106/3 and then stitched a small partnership with skipper Ajinkya Rahane. He then took charge of his innings with R Jadeja on the other end.

Shreyas Iyer scored way more than skipper Rahane (35) and Cheteshwar Pujara (26) sending a big signal to the selectors ahead of the India tour of South Africa. At 33, Pujara and Rahane are no longer the same players that India relied on to win games. While Rahane smashed his last century in December last year, Pujara’s century drought is ON since January 2019. Iyer would now look to go for a big hundred in his maiden Test in his bid to become a formidable part of India Test cricket.
