IND vs SA LIVE: Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer fail – Team India had a problem of plenty on Wednesday when their middle order failed to deliver yet again in the IND vs SA 1st ODI. Chasing 297 to win, India got off to a fine start with Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli scoring half-centuries. However, India then succumbed to a disappointing collapse with Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer and Rishabh Pant all falling in quick succession to hand South Africa the game.
Shreyas Iyer made the cut ahead of Suryakumar Yadav into the Playing XI but failed to make his mark as Team India fell short in their chase of 297 in the IND vs SA 1st ODI at Boland Park. Iyer came into bat with India needing 145 more to win, but failed to get going, eventually being dismissed trying to hook a short ball by Lungi Ngidi, only to glove it to keeper Quinton de Kock.
Rishabh Pant, who scored a century in his last innings during the Test series, was the next to fall as he managed just 16 himself. Andile Phehlukwayo bowled a wide down the leg side and pant in a bid to play a flick lost his balance and De Kock stumped him quickly to send him packing.
Venkatesh Iyer, playing his maiden ODI, also failed to make a mark, managing just two off seven deliveries before pulling a short ball straight to the hands of the fielder. Venkatesh Iyer’s dismissal was followed by Ravichandran Ashwin’s wicket, as India lost four wickets in a five-over period to give South Africa the advantage and eventual the win.
Shardul Thakur hung in until the end and scored a half-century leaving India to the rue the fact that none of the middle order batters stuck in and got the job done. Thakur and Jasprit Bumrah in fact had a fifty partnership, further demonstrating how Shreyas Iyer and Co. could have managed the game and got the side over the finish line.
