Delhi Capitals is on top of IPL 2021 points table with six wins in eight matches and all of it came under the captaincy of Rishabh Pant. This is the reason, Delhi Capitals do not want to tinker with captaincy for IPL in UAE. According to a report DC will Rishabh Pant as the skipper for the IPL 2021 Phase 2. This comes despite regular captain Shreyas Iyer being available for the remainder of the season having recovered from a shoulder injury
Last week when InsideSport reached out to Delhi Capitals officials, they were divided over the captaincy issue. But the franchise seems to have found a way. They are determined to keep Rishabh Pant as the captain at least for the remainder of the IPL 2021. The reason behind the decision is that Shreyas Iyer is still making a recovery and hasn’t played any competitive match since March this year having undergone shoulder surgery.
“Shreyas Iyer is already in UAE with a fitness coach. The captain issue is still undecided, either it will be Pant or Iyer, the team management has not yet decided on this,” an official told ANI.
As per a Cricbuzz report, the co-owners of the franchise Kiran Kumar Granthi and Parth Jindal now have reached the decision to continue with Rishabh Pant. They do not want to take any chances considering his lack of competitive games.
However, Granthi, who is now running the franchise as per the internal agreement, refused to commit. He told Cricbuzz that a decision will be reached once all the players and coaches assemble in Dubai.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer is preparing for a grand comeback as a batsman if not the captain. Having missed out on Phase 1, he reached Dubai early ahead of the team to begin his preparations.
“I am feeling on top of the world, to be honest. This was the thing I was eagerly waiting for. It’s never a bad feeling to be among the team. I came six days prior to the start of the practice sessions for the team, and I had two good games against the UAE team, so I just want to continue with the same momentum,” Shreyas Iyer said in a Delhi Capitals press release.
He is currently training under DC assistant coach Pravin Amre. “I was sitting in front of the TV, watching each and every game and feeling as if I am on the ground and trying to replicate the scenario at my place. But, it’s in the past now, I have to forget about it and continue with the same flow, the team has maintained throughout,” Iyer said.
