India’s golden boy Neeraj Chopra believes that it was the prayers and blessings of supporters in the country that helped him clinch the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics earlier this month. Chopra became India’s second individual gold medallist after Abhinav Bindra while becoming the first to do so in track and field events. The athlete’s efforts saw him rake in rewards from all around the country, with IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) also honouring his win.
In a video uploaded by Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Tokyo Olympics goal medallist Neeraj Chopra talked about his historic gold medal-winning throw. Chopra has been the talk of the town ever since his triumph and the 23-year-old talked about the love he has received from the fans in the country.
Neeraj Chopra said, “Thank you so much firstly for your support and for the prize awarded. Feels really good. I had worked really hard and never thought he would receive so much love from the people of our country after winning the gold medal. It was unexpected and I felt great.”

The Tokyo Olympics gold medallist added, “As soon as I entered the stadium, although I was prepared I went completely blank, but eventually I reached a phase where I was fully focused. There were hopes and prayers with me of winning a medal at least, but it was eventually the prayers that helped me achieve the gold medal.”
IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, on Sunday, rewarded the Tokyo Olympic Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra with Rs. 1 Crore cash prize as they had announced when Neeraj won the gold medal in Javelin Throw event.
The KS Vishwanathan owned franchise also presented a special jersey with the number 8758 (highlighting his medal-winning effort of 87.58m) as a mark of respect to Neeraj, who joined Abhinav Bindra as only the second individual gold medallist in Olympics.
“The entire nation is proud of Neeraj for his stupendous achievement. By becoming the first Indian to win a medal (gold) in the track and field, he has set a benchmark and is an inspiration for the next generation. 87.58 is a number that will forever be etched in Indian sporting history and it’s an honour for us to present this special jersey to Neeraj. We wish he brings more glory to the nation,” said CSK CEO K.S Viswanathan.
